Ohio native, Matthew Andrew Cavanaugh, is a former Pitt Panther and NFL quarterback. With the Pitt Panthers, Cavanaugh was a starting quarterback by his second season and helped the team to a National Championship title in the Sugar Bowl earning him the MVP award.

Matt Cavanaugh played at quarterback in the NFL from 1978 to 1991 with numerous teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. Cavanaugh was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 1978 NFL Draft. Over his NFL football career, Cavanaugh earned two Super Bowl rings and ended with almost 5,000 total yards and 30 touchdown throws.

Upon retirement from the NFL in 1991, Matt Cavanaugh took a season off before going on to coach seven NFL teams. Cavanaugh has been with the New York Jets since 2009. Although Cavanaugh left his coaching post with the Pittsburgh Panthers for a spot in the NFL, he still tries to make it to as many Pitt Panthers football games as possible.
